Amid pressure, Langley looks to three-peat
Posted Tuesday, March 22, 2011 12:40AM | Updated: Wednesday, March 30, 2011 7:51AM
The past is inescapable for the Langley High School boys' lacrosse team, even if its focus on the upcoming regular season is to forget they've won back-to-back Virginia State High School League state championships.
On the way to the locker room, there's a photo of Coach Earl Brewer sitting atop his players' shoulders after the finals victory in 2009. There are trophies of the Saxons' recent region and district conquests. And former players can be spotted walking toward Brewer's office to reminisce over the teams' past glory.
But the past is the past, even if the memories are sweet.

Two titles in any sport is not a dynasty. It means you had a cadre of stud juniors that then became seniors. I will retract all if Langley wins a three-peat. That would be impressive.
I agree that the Concorde is a no-show in state finals this year. Herndon (basketball), Chantilly, Robinson and Centreville (football) were lurking, but could not deliver. Not sure about baseball and lacrosse is defnitely up in the air. Should be a good time.

This article makes it seem like Langley is the UCLA basketball team of the '70s. They won twice in a row. Robinson won twice in a row (2006 and 2007). The Concorde district boasts 4 of the last 6 state champs and 4 of the last 6 runners-up.
Talk all day long about Annandale and Woodson, but they have not been in the final since before 2005. The Liberty district has not seen a final except for Langley in .......ever?
Since 2008, Chantilly has less overall losses (with a Concorde district schedule) than Langley and is one goal from being the team with two titles (the 2009 OT loss to Langley in the state final). I don't consider any of the Concorde to be annoited dynasty status, but somehow Langley has the media hoodwinked.

If Chantilly had won 2 years ago they would have been the "dynasty" the local sports guys would be talking about. Local press tends to build up some of the sports to more than they are creating this type of hyperbole in their articles. Langly has the bragging rights and being only the second team to go back to back they are thrust into this local spotlight.
What is interesting is that if you look at the NR in all the major sports (boys) the Patriot has ruled the roost with LB winning the last two NR champtionships, TC beating Annandale in this year's NR champtionship, West Springfield and LB dominating Baseball.....Concord may have the stronger recent history in Lacrosse but they are not the super district that a lot of people think they are. Maybe this is the Patriot's year in Lacrosse as well. They still have to play the games, right?
